Ganjam: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik became emotional while interacting with farmers affected by Cyclone Arnab and subsequent floods during his visit to Ganjam district on Saturday.

Patnaik visited flood-hit areas, including Sheragada and Hinjilicut, where farmers and local residents shared their experiences of crop destruction, damaged infrastructure and difficulties caused by the flooding.

After listening to their problems, the former Chief Minister expressed concern over the situation and called upon the Odisha government to provide immediate compensation to affected people.

Farmers Show Damaged Crops to Naveen Patnaik

During the visit, farmers brought damaged and rotten paddy plants to highlight the extent of agricultural losses caused by the cyclone and subsequent flooding.

Several residents described how their crops had been destroyed after months of hard work, leaving farming families worried about their livelihoods and household expenses.

Patnaik interacted with affected people and listened to their demands for financial assistance and relief.

Speaking to reporters, he said the situation in Sheragada and Hinjilicut was not good and that distressed farmers needed immediate help. He also said he had asked the administration to provide compensation to affected people.

Visit Covers Sheragada, Hinjilicut, Aska and Sorada

Patnaik’s tour included several flood-affected locations across Ganjam district.

He visited Sheragada and Nu-Burupada Gram Panchayat in Hinjilicut block. The programme also included visits to affected areas in Aska and Baligochha in Sorada block.

During the tour, he assessed the damage caused by flooding and interacted with affected families and farmers. He also reviewed the restoration work being undertaken in the affected areas.

Farmers Demand Compensation for Crop Losses

Farmers in several affected areas have reported extensive damage to agricultural fields following heavy rainfall and flooding.

The destruction of paddy and vegetable crops has created concerns over income losses and the ability of farming families to meet their daily expenses.

Affected residents have sought compensation and support to recover from the damage.

The visit provided an opportunity for farmers to directly communicate their problems to the Leader of Opposition.

Political Reactions During the Visit

Patnaik’s visit also attracted political attention.

During the tour, posters carrying the slogan ‘Naveen Go Back’ were reportedly spotted near the Rushikulya bridge in Hinjilicut.

Balasore BJP MP Pratap Sarangi also commented on the timing of the visit, questioning why Patnaik had not visited the affected region earlier.

The visit comes amid continuing concerns over flood damage and the pace of relief and restoration work in parts of Ganjam district.
