PM Modi congratulates Neeraj Chopra for breaching 90 m mark: Doha Diamond League 2025

Published on

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday lauded Olympic gold medalist and world champion Neeraj Chopra for crossing the 90-meter mark at the 2025 Doha Diamond League.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, “A spectacular feat! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for breaching the 90 m mark at Doha Diamond League 2025 and achieving his personal best throw. This is the outcome of his relentless dedication, discipline and passion. India is elated and proud.”

At the season-opening event, Neeraj threw an impressive 90.23 meters, placing him second behind Germany’s Julian Weber, who secured the top spot with a massive 91.06-meter throw in the final round.

Despite finishing second, Neeraj set a new national record with his 90.23-meter effort, surpassing his previous best of 89.94 meters from the 2022 Stockholm Diamond League. He also became the first Indian ever to cross the highly anticipated 90-meter threshold — a milestone that had long been a topic of discussion in Indian sporting circles, according to ANI.

Neeraj Chopra’s Athletic Journey

Neeraj’s ascent in athletics began in 2016 with gold medals at the South Asian Games and the World U20 Championships, along with a silver at the Asian U20 Championships. He followed up with a gold medal at the 2017 Asian Championships. His breakthrough moment came at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, where he became the first Indian javelin thrower to win a gold medal, with a throw of 86.47 meters.
