Zelensky praises ‘brilliant’ drone attack as Ukraine damages 40 Russian jets
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday hailed a large-scale drone assault deep within Russian territory as a “brilliant operation,” declaring it a major success for Ukraine’s military. The operation, named “Spiderweb,” reportedly destroyed over 40 Russian military aircraft at multiple airbases. In a series of posts on social media platform X, Zelensky emphasized that the attack was aimed solely at military targets, specifically aircraft and equipment used to launch strikes against Ukraine.
Zelensky credited the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and its head, General Vasyl Maliuk, for planning and executing the mission. He revealed that 117 drones were used in the operation, with each operated by a trained professional. Notably, he disclosed that the base of operations for the mission was located next to an FSB headquarters in one of Russia’s regions. The results were significant, with approximately 34% of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carrier fleet being destroyed.
He further added that Ukrainian personnel had coordinated activities across multiple Russian regions and spanned three time zones. Those who supported the operation from within Russia were safely evacuated before the strike took place. Zelensky shared that the mission was more than a year and a half in the making, and its successful execution has significantly weakened Russia’s aerial military capabilities.
President Zelensky also warned Ukrainian citizens to remain alert and responsive to air raid sirens, stressing that Russia continues to plan large-scale attacks. He noted that prior to Operation Spiderweb, Ukrainian intelligence had learned of Russia’s preparations for another significant strike, including the deployment of Kalibr missiles from naval vessels and nearly 500 attack drones in one night.
He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to defense, insisting that the country never desired war but was forced to respond in kind. He pointed out that Ukraine, along with the United States, had proposed a ceasefire back in March, but Russia rejected it and chose to escalate the conflict.
Zelensky called for increased international pressure on Russia, emphasizing the need for a coordinated effort involving economic sanctions, military resistance, and diplomatic pressure to bring Russia back to the negotiating table. He concluded by stating that all forms of pressure must be applied together to be effective in stopping the war and restoring peace.
