The Ministry of Railways has announced that online Tatkal ticket bookings on the IRCTC website and mobile app will require Aadhaar-based account authentication starting from July 1, 2025. This move aims to enhance fairness and transparency in the ticketing process and protect the interests of genuine passengers.
New OTP Verification Rules for Tatkal Ticket Booking
As part of the new system to be implemented from July 15, Aadhaar-based OTP authentication will be mandatory for all online Tatkal ticket bookings. The same OTP-based verification will also be required at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised agents, using the mobile number provided by the user during booking.
Booking Window Restrictions for Agents to Curb Bulk Reservations
To address the issue of bulk bookings during the Tatkal opening window, the Indian Railways has introduced a new restriction for its authorised agents. These agents will not be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking period.
- For AC classes, bookings will be restricted from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM
- For non-AC classes, from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM
Transparency and Equitable Access
The Railway Ministry said that the initiative is aimed at ensuring that the Tatkal ticket scheme benefits real passengers rather than touts or bulk agents. The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC have been directed to carry out all necessary technical changes and to notify Zonal Railways and relevant departments for smooth implementation.
