Parag Jain Appointed New RAW Chief for Two-Year Term
New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed senior IPS officer Parag Jain as the next chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the country’s premier external intelligence agency. A 1989-batch officer from the Punjab cadre, Jain will assume office on June 30, succeeding Ravi Sinha, who is set to retire after completing his one-year tenure.
Jain’s appointment is for a fixed term of two years. He brings with him decades of experience in intelligence and counterterrorism, having played crucial roles in high-profile operations such as the Balakot airstrike and the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir.
Currently heading RAW’s Pakistan desk, Jain also serves as the chief of the Aviation Research Center (ARC). He was instrumental in identifying cross-border terror camps during Operation Sindoor, showcasing his strategic expertise in aerial surveillance and intelligence gathering.
His past roles include postings as SSP Chandigarh and DIG Ludhiana, where he was active in anti-terror operations. Jain has also represented India in key foreign postings, including Canada and Sri Lanka, where he helped dismantle a Khalistani support network.
Ravi Sinha’s Legacy
Outgoing RAW chief Ravi Sinha, a 1988-batch officer from the Chhattisgarh cadre, served the agency for over a year after being appointed in June 2023. Known for his discretion and effectiveness, Sinha earned the moniker “Operation Man” in intelligence circles for executing covert missions with precision.
Originally from Bhojpur, Bihar, Sinha is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and had an illustrious career that spanned multiple postings and sensitive missions.
RAW’s Founding & Legacy
The Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) was formed in 1968, with Rameshwar Nath Kao as its first director. Kao, regarded as India’s legendary spymaster, laid the foundation for India’s modern intelligence architecture. His tenure helped establish RAW’s global reach and internal structure, and he continued advising prime ministers on national security even after his official tenure ended.
Parag Jain’s elevation to RAW’s top post is expected to continue this legacy of strategic intelligence and operational excellence at a time when India faces evolving global and regional security challenges.
