Gukesh Defeats Magnus Carlsen Again in Zagreb, Scores Fifth Straight Win at Grand Chess Tour
Bengaluru: Indian chess prodigy Gukesh D pulled off another sensational victory over Magnus Carlsen, beating the world No.1 in Round 6 of the SuperUnited Croatia Rapid and Blitz in Zagreb, marking his fifth consecutive win in the ongoing leg of the Grand Chess Tour 2025.
Facing Carlsen for the first time since his shocking classical win at Norway Chess last month, Gukesh—playing Black—maintained composure and capitalised on Carlsen’s time trouble and positional errors. Despite being out of his preferred classical format, the 18-year-old displayed remarkable resilience and tactical maturity, prompting chess legend Garry Kasparov to say, “Now we can question Magnus’ domination. It’s a very convincing loss.”

Carlsen, who opened with the English, held an early advantage but faltered after 26…d5, allowing Gukesh to activate counterplay. As pressure mounted and Carlsen’s clock ticked down, he ultimately resigned after 49 moves. The game not only extended Gukesh’s winning streak but also reaffirmed his strength across formats—a growing edge over seasoned elites.

The Indian grandmaster had earlier defeated Nodirbek Abdusattorov with Black in Round 4, while Carlsen managed draws against Praggnanandhaa R and Alireza Firouzja, both of whom are strong contenders. Kasparov compared Gukesh’s focus and tenacity to that of a computer: “He’s the kind of player you have to beat many times.”
This performance signals a shift in the global chess landscape, with the young Indian sensation rapidly closing the gap between rising star and undisputed elite.
