Magnus Carlsen Clinches 7th Norway Chess Title After Dramatic Final Round

Published on

Magnus Carlsen entered the final round with a slim lead over D Gukesh. Against Arjun Erigaisi, Carlsen faced a superior position and was on the back foot for 34 moves. However, with a brilliant combination of knights and rook, he launched a counterattack to save the game. Though he couldn’t convert the position into a win, a draw via threefold repetition was enough to keep him ahead.

Gukesh Misses Chance, Caruana Capitalizes

A draw between Gukesh and Fabiano Caruana could’ve forced Armageddon tiebreaks. Caruana made a mistake on move 47, but Gukesh blundered right after on move 48 by promoting his pawn instead of capturing a bishop. The resulting knight fork sealed his fate. In trying to win, Gukesh not only lost the title but also slipped to third place, while Caruana moved up to second.
