Marathon Legend Fauja Singh Dies at 114 in Tragic Road Accident in Jalandhar

Published on

Fauja Singh, the world-renowned marathon runner from Punjab, passed away in a tragic road accident on Monday afternoon at the age of 114. The accident occurred around 3:30 PM near Beas village in Adampur, Jalandhar district, while Singh was out for his regular walk.

Hit by Speeding Vehicle, Succumbs to Injuries

According to his family, the veteran athlete was crossing the national highway near his home when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle, suspected to be either an Innova or a Fortuner. The driver fled the scene. Singh was immediately rushed to Shrimann Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the evening.

Jalandhar Rural SSP Harvinder Virk confirmed that a case has been registered against the unidentified driver, and CCTV footage is being reviewed to identify and apprehend the accused.

A Life That Redefined Limits

Born in 1911, Fauja Singh began marathon running at the age of 89, following the death of his wife and son. To cope with grief and loneliness, he turned to running—and the world soon took notice. Over the years, he ran 18 marathons across the globe, starting with the London Marathon in 2000.

Though he officially retired in 2013, after marathons in Toronto, London, and Hong Kong, he continued to participate as a flag bearer, motivator, and guest in countless events until the age of 102.

Despite not featuring in the Guinness Book of World Records due to lack of valid birth documentation, Singh was globally recognised as the oldest marathon runner.

Singh was more than just an athlete. A British Sikh, he raised funds for numerous charities, supporting causes like premature baby care, Sikh welfare, and drug awareness. His personality and lifestyle—lean, vegetarian, and humble—earned him a place in PETA campaigns and even as the face of Adidas’s ‘Impossible is Nothing’ campaign.

Nation Mourns the Loss of a Hero

Condolences poured in from across political lines and international communities. Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, in a heartfelt post on X, called Singh a “symbol of resilience and hope,” reminiscing about walking with him during the ‘Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab’ march in December 2024.

“His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those fighting for a healthier, drug-free Punjab,” Kataria wrote.

Political leaders like Congress’s Pargat Singh and BJP’s Iqbal Singh Lalpur also remembered him as an inspiration for the youth and a true icon of India’s sporting spirit.

Fauja Singh’s journey from grief to greatness will continue to inspire generations. At 114, he not only defied physical boundaries but also redefined aging, proving that discipline, purpose, and courage can fuel a lifetime of achievement.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
