UIDAI: Update Aadhaar Biometrics for Children Aged 5–7 Before They Turn Seven

Published on

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has urged parents to update their children’s Aadhaar biometrics between ages five and seven. The update—capturing fingerprints and iris data—is free at any Aadhaar enrolment centre if completed before a child turns seven.

Penalty After Seven and Possible Aadhaar Cancellation

Failing to update within the free window can lead to two consequences:

  1. ₹100 fee for updates made after the seventh birthday.
  2. Potential cancellation of the child’s Aadhaar number if biometrics remain un‑updated, UIDAI warned.

Why the Update Matters

UIDAI explained that a biometric‑updated Aadhaar:

  • Eases processes like school admissions and entrance‑exam registrations.
  • Enables smooth access to Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes, scholarships and other government services tied to Aadhaar authentication.

SMS Alerts and Enrolment Process

  • SMS reminders have been dispatched to registered mobile numbers linked to children’s Aadhaar records.
  • Parents can visit any Aadhaar enrolment centre to complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU).
  • Below age five, fingerprints and iris scans are not taken, making the 5–7 age bracket the first and critical window for biometric capture.

Quick Checklist for Parents

  1. Locate nearest enrolment centre via the UIDAI website or mAadhaar app.
  2. Carry the child’s Aadhaar letter, one ID proof of parent/guardian, and child’s birth certificate (if requested).
  3. Ensure biometric data (fingerprints & iris) is captured and mobile number is current for future alerts.

Updating on time guarantees that your child’s Aadhaar remains active, free, and future‑ready for every essential service.
