New Delhi: In a significant move to enhance student safety and mental well-being, the Ministry of Education has directed all States and Union Territories to undertake mandatory safety audits in schools and other child-related facilities. The directive aims to enforce national safety standards and build a safe, secure, and supportive educational environment for children.

According to the Ministry’s advisory, the steps outlined for immediate implementation include:

Preventive Safety Measures

  • Mandatory safety audits as per national safety codes.
  • Strengthening physical infrastructure and safety equipment in schools.
  • Emergency preparedness, including evacuation plans, fire drills, and first aid training.

Awareness and Training

  • Compulsory training programs for teachers, school staff, and students on emergency response.
  • Periodic workshops and drills to raise awareness on risk management.

Psychosocial Well-being

  • Access to trained counsellors and mental health professionals in schools.
  • Formation of peer support networks to provide emotional and psychological support to students.

Reporting Mechanism

  • Establishment of anonymous reporting systems for students to report threats, abuse, or safety concerns.
  • Designation of safety officers within institutions to act promptly on student grievances.

Public Responsibility

  • Encouraging community participation and parental involvement in school safety planning.
  • Creating partnerships with local law enforcement and health departments for regular monitoring.

The Ministry has urged education departments, school boards, and affiliated authorities to implement the recommendations without delay. The directive is seen as a response to recent concerns over student safety and mental health challenges across the country.

Officials stated that these measures aim to foster a culture of safety, resilience, and psychological support in schools, ensuring that educational institutions serve not only as centers of learning but also of protection and care.
