Odisha CM Launches ‘Akanksha Haat’ to Promote Local Products and Grassroots Economy

Bhubaneswar: In a strong push toward empowering grassroots entrepreneurs and reviving the local economy, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday announced the launch of a week-long ‘Akanksha Haat’ campaign in Bhubaneswar. The campaign aims to promote locally made products from aspirational blocks and districts of Odisha under the Akanksha brand, launched nationally in 2024.

Speaking at an event organized by the Planning and Convergence Department, Majhi emphasized the transformative role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, which has now evolved into a people’s movement.

“This week-long Akanksha Haat campaign will take the Akanksha brand to every corner of Odisha. It will provide greater market access for rural artisans, women self-help groups, farmers, and weavers, ultimately improving their economic conditions,” the CM said.

Key Highlights of the Akanksha Haat Initiative:

  • Week-long statewide campaign to promote local products from aspirational blocks.
  • Increased visibility and accessibility of indigenous goods in remote and tribal areas.
  • Products to be made available on digital e-marketplaces for both state and national consumers.
  • Focus on product quality, pricing, and market-driven availability.

Aspirational District and Block Performance Recognized

Majhi also lauded the performance of Odisha’s aspirational districts and blocks under the national Aspirational District and Aspirational Block Programme, which focus on Convergence, Collaboration, and Competition (3Cs) to improve governance and service delivery.

“Our blocks and districts have shown remarkable progress in various sectors. I am proud to share that Odisha received a collective award of ₹165 crore from the Centre,” Majhi announced.

Award-Winning Districts:

  • Gold: Malkangiri, Nabarangpur
  • Silver: Kandhamal, Koraput
  • Bronze: Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur

Award-Winning Blocks (Aspirational Block Programme):

  • Gold: Khairput, Mathili, Chitrakonda, Dabugaon
  • Silver: 7 blocks
  • Bronze: 3 blocks
  • Copper: 11 blocks

The Akanksha Haat campaign is expected to not only support local livelihoods but also create sustainable economic models by integrating rural producers into the formal digital economy. With Odisha’s growing focus on decentralised development, this initiative may become a blueprint for other states aiming to empower marginalised communities through local enterprise.
