India Launches First Projects Under UN Global South Capacity Building Initiative

India formally launched the first set of projects under the India UN Global Capacity Building Initiative, marking a significant step in supporting the Global South through focused training and development efforts. The event was presided over by Shri Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and witnessed participation from UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Shombi Sharp, heads of various UN agencies in India, senior MEA officials, and ambassadors of the participating countries.

Strengthening South-South Cooperation for SDGs

The India UN Global Capacity Building Initiative was originally unveiled by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in September 2023 during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Since then, the Ministry of External Affairs and the UN Country Team in India have collaborated to identify high-impact, demand-driven projects aimed at accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in partner countries.

The initiative is deeply rooted in India’s long-standing commitment to South-South cooperation. Its flagship programme, ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation), has already trained over 225,000 individuals from 160 countries, offering more than 12,000 slots annually across 400+ specialized courses.

India UN Global Capacity Building Initiative: Training Projects Launched

The launch of the India UN Global Capacity Building Initiative begins with four country-specific projects in collaboration with key UN agencies. These training programmes are designed to support human capital development in critical areas such as health, nutrition, statistics, and skill-building.

Projects Announced in Phase 1:

  1. Nepal: Rice Fortification and Supply Chain Management – with support from the World Food Programme (WFP)
  2. Zambia & Lao PDR: Digital Health Platform Development – with support from the UN Development Programme (UNDP)
  3. Caribbean Countries (Belize, Barbados, St. Kitts & Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago): Census Preparedness Training – in collaboration with UN Population Fund (UNFPA)
  4. South Sudan: Vocational Training Programme – with support from UNESCO

Each project will be executed through the ITEC programme, with selected training institutes in India conducting the respective modules starting from September 2025.

A Strategic Step Toward Achieving SDGs

India’s partnership with UN agencies under this initiative exemplifies its evolving role as a knowledge and capacity building hub for the developing world. These collaborative efforts aim to make a tangible impact on SDG implementation, especially in countries with capacity gaps in key sectors.

The UN agencies will assist participating countries in identifying relevant SDG-linked priorities, while India provides the training infrastructure and technical expertise.

The India UN Global Capacity Building Initiative underscores India’s commitment to multilateral development and inclusive progress. As training programmes roll out under ITEC, these efforts are expected to deepen India’s diplomatic engagement and expand its developmental footprint across the Global South.
