Mount Lewotobi Volcano Erupts Twice, Sends Ash 18,000 Meters High

Published on

Jakarta: Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano erupted twice between Friday night and early Saturday, sending ash clouds soaring as high as 18,000 meters into the sky, prompting travel disruptions and heightened alerts.

Details of the Eruptions

  • The first eruption occurred at 8:45 p.m. (local time) on Friday, with an ash plume reaching up to 10,000 meters.
  • The second and more powerful eruption took place at 1:26 a.m. today, propelling volcanic ash up to 18,000 meters high.

The eruptions were accompanied by loud rumblings and booms, shaking the region. Seismographs recorded a 47.3 mm amplitude during the stronger eruption, indicating significant volcanic activity.

Ash clouds drifted toward the southwest, west, and northwest, affecting visibility and air quality across nearby regions.

Alert Level and Safety Measures

Mount Lewotobi remains at its highest alert level (Level IV). Authorities have issued the following advisories:

  • Maintain a 6 km exclusion zone from the crater.
  • Extend the safety perimeter to 7 km southwest and northeast of the volcano.
  • Wear masks and protective eyewear due to ash inhalation risks.
  • Stay alert for volcanic floods or lahars, especially during rainfall.

The volcanic activity led to flight delays and cancellations at Komodo International Airport, with aviation authorities issuing red alerts for the ash plume, which poses serious risks to aircraft engines.

About Mount Lewotobi

Mount Lewotobi is one of 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia, a country that sits on the seismically active “Ring of Fire.” The nation experiences frequent volcanic activity due to the convergence of multiple tectonic plates.

Authorities continue to monitor Mount Lewotobi closely as it poses ongoing risks to residents and air traffic. Citizens are urged to follow official guidelines and avoid hazardous zones until further notice.
