NEW DELHI: The Operation Amistad humanitarian mission has been launched by India to provide urgent assistance to Venezuela following devastating earthquakes that caused widespread destruction and significant loss of life. The relief operation includes two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft transporting an Indian Army Field Hospital Unit, medical personnel and more than 35 tonnes of humanitarian supplies.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the mission, reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting the people and government of Venezuela during the ongoing disaster response. The deployment reflects India’s growing role in international humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
Operation Amistad Delivers Advanced Medical Support to Venezuela
The relief package includes medicines, emergency medical equipment and two indigenous BHISHM Cubes, rapidly deployable modular medical facilities designed for disaster response. These portable units can be assembled into fully functional field hospitals capable of treating up to 200 patients with trauma care, emergency surgeries and intensive care support.
The Indian Army has also deployed a specialised contingent from the 60 Para Field Hospital. The team comprises 41 personnel, including nine medical officers, trained to provide emergency healthcare, trauma management and life-saving surgical treatment in disaster-hit regions.
The aircraft departed from Hindon Air Force Station and are travelling approximately 14,300 kilometres to Venezuela. Since the operational range of the C-17 aircraft is shorter than the total distance, the planes will make scheduled refuelling stops in friendly countries before reaching their destination.

According to reports, Venezuela continues to face an evolving humanitarian crisis after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude struck within seconds of each other. The twin tremors caused extensive damage across parts of the central coast and the capital, Caracas, leaving hundreds dead, many injured and rescue teams searching for survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences over the tragedy and reaffirmed India’s readiness to extend all possible assistance. Operation Amistad represents that commitment, combining military logistics, medical expertise and indigenous technology to support relief efforts in one of the deadliest disasters to strike Venezuela in decades.
