BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha textbook error action entered a new phase after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi accepted the findings of the inquiry committee headed by the Development Commissioner and ordered immediate administrative action. The report examined the large-scale errors found in school textbooks and recommended disciplinary measures along with systemic reforms to improve the publication process.
Acting on the committee’s recommendations, the state government suspended four officials and initiated disciplinary proceedings against six others. The move reflects the government’s effort to fix accountability while strengthening quality control in the education system.
Odisha Textbook Error Action Targets Accountability
The suspended officials include Manoj Padhi, former Director of Teachers Training and SCERT, along with Assistant Directors Pralipta Mishra, Dilip Kumar Sahu and Bharati Tudu.
In addition, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against six Assistant Directors: Bandita Pattnaik, Manas Ranjan Rout, Manoranjan Mahapatra, Dr Prashant Kumar Sahu, Manas Kumar Nayak and Dr Sudarshan Santra.
Officials said the committee identified administrative lapses in the textbook preparation process and recommended action to ensure accountability at different levels of the publication system.
Why the Odisha Textbook Error Action Matters
Beyond disciplinary action, the inquiry has resulted in structural reforms aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. The committee recommended 14 corrective measures designed to strengthen textbook preparation, editing and approval procedures.
Among the key reforms, SCERT will maintain a master errata register and provide corrected information to all affected students. A dedicated Quality Assurance Cell will also be established to oversee textbook quality before publication.
The second-order impact of these reforms could be a more transparent and accountable textbook publishing system. Mandatory approval of language, illustrations, factual content and design before printing is expected to reduce the risk of large-scale errors and improve confidence among students, teachers and parents.
Officials said the government’s objective is not only to address the present controversy but also to build a stronger quality assurance framework that ensures accurate and reliable educational materials for future academic sessions.
