Bihar Elections 2025: In a major pre-election announcement, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday declared that eligible domestic consumers in Bihar will receive up to 125 units of electricity free of cost starting August 1, 2025. The scheme is expected to benefit nearly 1.67 crore families across the state.
Free Power from July Bill Onwards
“We’ve ensured affordable electricity for all, and now, from August 1, 2025 — that is, from the July billing cycle — households using up to 125 units will not need to pay,” CM Kumar said in a post on social media platform X.
The initiative is part of the Bihar government’s strategy to provide financial relief to families while showcasing its commitment to sustainable energy and rural development.
Solar Power for Every Household Within 3 Years
Kumar also unveiled a vision to install solar power plants on rooftops or nearby public spaces of domestic consumers over the next three years. He said this move aims to create a self-reliant energy ecosystem across Bihar.
“With the consent of domestic consumers, solar panels will be installed either on rooftops or nearby public locations. For the poorest families, the government will bear the entire cost. Others will receive financial aid under the Kutir Jyoti scheme,” he said.
The Chief Minister projected that up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy could be generated in the state within three years under this initiative.
Free Power and Solar Support Under Kutir Jyoti
Under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, extremely poor families will get 100% government funding for solar installations, while other households will get appropriate financial support. The combined plan aims to cut electricity costs for consumers and boost clean energy capacity statewide.
Focus on Education and Women’s Reservation
In a series of poll-related welfare measures, CM Kumar also directed the Education Department to quickly identify vacancies in government schools and begin the process for Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE) 4.
Reaffirming his commitment to gender equity in government jobs, Kumar reiterated that 35% of teaching posts will be reserved for women domiciled in Bihar.
