Kendrapara: A helicopter used by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has been stranded on the playground of Kendrapara Autonomous College for over a month, causing widespread inconvenience to students, faculty, and local residents.
The incident occurred on June 9, during the Chief Minister’s maiden visit to Kendrapara district. While Majhi safely landed at the temporary helipad on the college ground, lightning struck the chopper amid heavy rainfall, forcing him to return by road. Since then, the damaged helicopter has remained parked at the site.
College Activities Paralyzed, Locals Affected
Due to security reasons, the entire playground has been barricaded. A police camp and fire service personnel are stationed round the clock to guard the chopper. This has led to the cancellation of all sports and cultural activities at the college since June 9.
“The ground has been off-limits for over a month,” said a college teacher on condition of anonymity. “It’s affecting both academics and local routines.”
Nagendra Das, a local resident, shared his concern:
“We used to walk on the playground every morning. But for the last month, we’ve had to abandon our daily routine.”
Former principal Nanda Kishor Parida highlighted that the college ground is the only venue for major district events, including the Pallishree Mela, Independence Day, and Republic Day celebrations.
“The extended presence of the chopper is causing difficulties for everyone. Authorities should relocate it soon,” he urged.
According to Rabindra Kumar Behera, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Kendrapara, aviation engineers tried for a week to fix the technical issues caused by lightning, but were unsuccessful.
“The district administration has informed the state government. Once repaired, the helicopter will be flown out,” Behera added.
