Captains Meet in Mumbai: Saliva ban revoked form IPL 2025

Published on

Mumbai: In IPL 2025, bowlers will be able to apply saliva to the ball. The IPL made the decision after the majority of franchise captains expressed their support for the idea at a meeting with tournament decision-makers on Thursday at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

Several captains agreed that the saliva ban, which was adopted by the ICC and implemented by member boards at all levels of cricket, was harming bowlers, particularly by preventing reverse swing, which has become rare in white-ball cricket, including ODIs, where two new balls are used.

Mohammed Siraj On Saliva Ban Revoke

Gujarat Titans (GT) fast bowler Mohammed Siraj agreed with the captains. “It’s excellent for bowlers. “It’s great news for us bowlers because applying saliva to the ball increases the chances of finding a reverse swing,” Siraj told PTI. “It sometimes improves reverse swing since rubbing the ball against the shirt does not help (to achieve reverse swing). However, placing saliva on the ball will aid to keep (the shine on one side), which is critical.”

The ban on using saliva to polish the ball was initially implemented as a temporary measure during the Covid-19 pandemic in May 2020. In September 2022, the ICC rendered the ban permanent. With bowlers permitted to use perspiration to shine the ball, top voices in the game had previously advocated for the use of an artificial substance in place of saliva. Jasprit Bumrah stated at the time that there should be “some alternative for the bowlers to maintain the ball”.

Mohammed Shami On Saliva Ban Revoke

Mohammed Shami, a fast bowler for India, has pleaded with the ICC to lift the rule on shining the ball with saliva. After India defeated Australia in the Champions Trophy semi-final, Shami had told media, “We are trying [to get reverse swing], but the usage of saliva on the ball is not allowed.” “We keep appealing that we should be allowed to use saliva so that we can bring reverse swing back into the game and it becomes interesting.”
Additionally, he had the support of Tim Southee and Vernon Philander, two former international bowlers.
