The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved a significant expansion in the investment powers of NTPC, allowing the Maharatna public sector enterprise to make larger investments in its green energy subsidiary, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL). This move enables NGEL to further invest in NTPC Renewable Energy Limited and its joint ventures, with the revised investment cap increased from ₹7,500 crore to ₹20,000 crore.
Targeting 60 GW of Renewable Energy by 2032
The approval is part of India’s larger push to achieve 60 GigaWatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity under the NTPC banner by 2032. The move aligns with India’s national renewable energy goals and the need for accelerated project development in the green sector.
Minister Vaishnaw: Enhanced Delegation Will Accelerate Green Projects
Speaking on the decision, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the enhanced delegation will facilitate faster implementation of renewable energy projects, contributing significantly to the country’s clean energy transition.
Special Investment Exemption for NLC India Limited
The CCEA has also granted a special exemption to NLC India Limited (NLCIL) from the standard investment rules applicable to Navratna PSUs. The exemption allows NLCIL to invest ₹7,000 crore in its wholly owned subsidiary, NLC India Renewables Limited.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that this strategic exemption will support NLCIL’s ambitious plan to develop 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
India Crosses 50% Green Energy Milestone
Highlighting the nation’s progress, Mr. Vaishnaw said India has now crossed the 50% mark in green energy capacity and is firmly on track to meet its COP26 commitments related to climate change and sustainability.
