Civil defence mock drills to be held in 4 border states tomorrow

Published on

A civil defence mock drill is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 29, in several Indian states that share borders with Pakistan—namely Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Reports also indicate that the Haryana government will carry out a comprehensive civil defence exercise named ‘Operation Shield’ on the same day. This large-scale drill, beginning at 5 PM across all 22 districts of the state, aims to enhance Haryana’s readiness and capability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

This move follows a series of nationwide drills held recently to evaluate the country’s preparedness for critical incidents such as warfare, missile strikes, or aerial attacks. These exercises preceded ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s military action targeting nine terrorist locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, conducted in retaliation for the April 22 attack in Pahalgam.

What is a Civil Defence Mock Drill?

Civil defence mock drills are strategic exercises designed to evaluate and improve emergency response systems. These simulations typically recreate high-risk scenarios like coordinated terrorist assaults, missile attacks, chemical hazards, and mass evacuations. Participants often include state disaster response forces, local police, fire departments, healthcare teams, and trained civil defence volunteers.

During such drills, civilians might witness temporary power outages, loud warning sirens, blackout conditions, public announcements, and controlled evacuations. Access to specific zones may be restricted, and traffic may be diverted to facilitate the operation.

How Should You Respond During a Mock Drill?

To ensure safety and support the effectiveness of the drill, follow these guidelines:

  • Rely only on official communication from government authorities.
  • Remain calm and composed, even if you hear sirens or experience a power outage.
  • Follow instructions given by police officers, civil defence personnel, or authorised volunteers.
  • Stay away from restricted or sealed-off areas designated for the drill.
  • Keep an emergency kit handy, including essentials such as drinking water, a flashlight, and basic first-aid supplies.

These drills are crucial for identifying potential weaknesses in the system and ensuring a rapid, coordinated response during real emergencies. Active public cooperation can make these exercises more effective and life-saving in the long run.
