New Delhi: Union Health Minister J P Nadda on Tuesday said FIRs registered against people who participated in the July protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) will be withdrawn and that no stringent action will be taken against them.
Nadda’s statement came after the Supreme Court quashed FIRs registered against students who participated in CJP-led protests held between July 20 and 25 across the country. Following the court’s decision, the organisation called off its planned September 5 march in Delhi.
Nadda said the government had already assured protesting students on July 25 that cases registered against them would be withdrawn, keeping their future in mind.
CJP Protest FIR Withdrawal After Government Assurance
According to Nadda, he and Union minister Jitendra Singh had met representatives of students protesting at Jantar Mantar on July 25.
During those discussions, the ministers assured the students that cases registered in connection with the protests would be withdrawn and that no further stringent action would be taken against them.
Nadda said the Centre subsequently discussed the matter with BJP-ruled states. He said those states had assured the government that FIRs registered against CJP protesters within their jurisdictions would also be withdrawn.
The minister welcomed the organisation’s decision to cancel its September 5 march in the national capital.
Why CJP Called Off September 5 March
The CJP had announced a protest march in Delhi on September 5, coinciding with Teachers’ Day. The organisation had accused the Centre of failing to fulfil commitments made on July 25 to end its 36-day agitation.
The agitation had focused on alleged irregularities in examinations and the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. According to the CJP, the proposed Delhi march was also intended to highlight the cases of students who died by suicide following the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 and subsequent re-test, as well as allegations of police excesses during the July protests.
With the Supreme Court quashing the FIRs against participating students and the government reiterating its commitment to withdraw cases, the CJP decided to call off the September 5 march.
CJP Student Protest: What Happened in July
The CJP-led protests had spread across several cities and were linked to demands concerning the NEET-UG 2026 examination and other alleged examination irregularities.
The organisation’s ‘Chalo Sansad’ march on July 20 resulted in clashes between protesters and security personnel. Police used lathis and tear gas to disperse protesters who attempted to move towards Parliament.
The wider agitation had begun at Jantar Mantar on June 20. The protests were centred on demands that included the resignation of then-Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The agitation was called off on July 25 after Pradhan resigned and the government accepted the CJP’s other demands, according to the information provided.
Nadda said the government’s priority remained the welfare and progress of young people, while reiterating that the assurance given to protesting students would now be implemented through the withdrawal of the FIRs.
