Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy has confirmed an attempted attack targeting an administrative building belonging to state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco in Riyadh on Sunday. The incident caused limited damage after falling shrapnel struck the building, but no injuries or fatalities were reported.
An official source at the Ministry of Energy said the relevant authorities responded promptly and initiated necessary measures following the incident.
The announcement came amid heightened security concerns after Saudi air defence forces intercepted missiles launched towards Riyadh and other regions of the kingdom.
Aramco Administrative Building Suffers Limited Damage
According to the Saudi Energy Ministry, the attempted attack resulted in falling shrapnel that damaged an administrative building associated with Saudi Aramco.
A media witness reported seeing broken windows across several floors of the Aramco Tower in Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD).
The ministry described the damage as limited and confirmed that there were no casualties. The company had not immediately issued a separate comment on the incident.
Saudi Air Defences Intercept Missiles
The incident followed reports from the Saudi-led coalition that its air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed missiles targeting the kingdom.
Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki said two ballistic missiles launched towards Riyadh were intercepted.
Other missiles and drones were also reported intercepted in the eastern and southern regions.
Saudi Civil Defence issued early-warning alerts in several areas, including Riyadh and Najran, before subsequently announcing that the immediate danger had passed.
Houthis Claim Operations Against Saudi Arabia
The development came after Yemen’s Houthi group claimed military operations against targets in Saudi Arabia.
The group has stepped up missile and drone attacks on Saudi infrastructure amid renewed fighting in the region.
However, the Saudi Energy Ministry’s confirmation of damage to the Aramco building did not independently establish responsibility for the specific incident. The circumstances of the attempted attack remain under investigation.
Rising Security Concerns for Saudi Energy Infrastructure
Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure has faced security threats during the renewed regional conflict.
The latest incident has drawn attention to the vulnerability of important energy and administrative facilities in Riyadh.
Saudi authorities have not reported any disruption to Aramco’s operations as a result of Sunday’s incident.
Further details about the attack and the response by security agencies are awaited.
