As Congress leader Rahul Gandhi begins his 16-day ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in poll-bound Bihar, the Election Commission (EC) is set to address the media this afternoon, triggering intense political debate over timing and intent.
The press conference, scheduled for 3 PM on Sunday, comes amid serious allegations of vote theft and voter-list manipulation made by Rahul Gandhi against the poll panel. Officials have not revealed the agenda of the briefing but confirmed it is related to the recent accusations levelled against the EC.
Rahul Gandhi has alleged “vote chori” in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana, claiming that voters have been wrongfully added or removed to benefit the ruling party. The poll body has demanded that Gandhi submit the names of such voters along with a signed declaration, and even hinted that the Leader of Opposition may need to apologise if he doesn’t back his claims with proof.
EC press conference Bihar Sparks Row as Opposition Flags Voter List Manipulation
The EC is already facing backlash over its decision to carry out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar. Opposition parties argue that the revision could disenfranchise lakhs of eligible citizens over documentation issues.
Earlier, the Supreme Court directed the commission to publish details of the 65 lakh names deleted from the Bihar voters’ list — along with clear reasons — in the interest of transparency.
Amid this situation, the sudden EC press conference Bihar has fuelled suspicions of political pressure and intent to respond to mounting criticism.
Rahul Gandhi Launches ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ to Mobilise Voters in Bihar
On the same day as the press conference, Rahul Gandhi kicked off his 1,300-km ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ from Sasaram. The yatra will cover 20 districts and end on September 1 with a mega rally in Patna, joined by leaders from several INDIA-bloc parties.

According to Gandhi, the yatra’s main goal is to “protect the most fundamental democratic right – one person, one vote.” Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar took a swipe at the EC, accusing it of “pulling strings to benefit the BJP” and suggesting that the poll panel should “directly contest elections” instead of conducting them.
As the political face-off intensifies, all eyes are now on the EC’s afternoon presser and the next moves in the escalating debate over voter rights and electoral transparency in Bihar.
