Explosion in Blast Furnace at Tata Steel Plant Meramandali, Injures 19

Dhenkanal: A blast furnace explosion at Tata Steel plant, Meramandali factory in Dhenkanal district of Odisha on Tuesday and injured 19 people. Critically injured are admitted to a hospital in Cuttack.

According to reports, some neighbouring workers were scalded after a steam pipe ruptured owing to a suspected gas leak. All 19 people who were injured in the event have been taken to a private hospital in Cuttack. Among the injured were numerous labourers and engineers.

Initially, they were all given first assistance at the plant’s medical facility. The mishap occurred today about 1 p.m. Two people are stated to be in critical condition.

Gyanaranjan Mohapatra, SP of Dhenkanal, said, “The valve carrying hot water was opened, and approximately 19 people were injured in the incident.” A team from the district administration will also investigate the incident, he said.

Soon after the incident, Tata Steel published a statement on the mishap at the BFPP2 power plant due to steam leakage at Tata Steel Meramandali Works in Dhenkanal, Odisha.

“The accident occurred today at 1:00 pm during the course of the inspection work and has affected a few people working at the site, who were immediately shifted to the Occupational Health Centre inside the plant premises and then to Cuttack for further treatment, as a precautionary measure, in the Company’s ambulance, accompanied by doctor and paramedics.”

Immediately following the accident, all emergency protocol services were activated, and the area was closed off. The company is providing all essential information and support to the families of the affected individuals, according to the statement.

The company stated that they are working closely with local authorities and have launched an internal inquiry to determine the cause of the disaster.
