First Look of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Antagonist Varang Revealed

Washington: The makers of James Cameron’s much-anticipated sequel Avatar: Fire and Ash have officially unveiled the first look of its new antagonist — Varang, the formidable leader of the Ash clan, portrayed by Oona Chaplin. The reveal was confirmed by Variety and shared via the official Avatar X (formerly Twitter) account.

Varang is set to emerge as a major threat to protagonists Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), introducing a darker and more complex chapter in the Avatar saga.

Trailer to Premiere Exclusively With Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four’

The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash will debut exclusively in theatres alongside screenings of Marvel’s upcoming film Fantastic Four: First Steps.

“Meet Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Be among the first to watch the trailer, exclusively in theatres this weekend,” read the caption on the Avatar X account.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Set for December 2025 Release

The third installment of the franchise is scheduled to release on December 19, 2025, continuing the epic journey on the planet Pandora. According to James Cameron, the new film will explore not just external threats but deeper emotional struggles as well, focusing on grief, identity, and cultural conflict.

During CinemaCon earlier this year, Disney showcased three minutes of exclusive footage, introduced by Cameron and Zoe Saldaña. Saldaña noted that the film will expand Pandora’s universe, introducing two new Na’vi clans: the Wind Traders and the Ash People.

In the CinemaCon footage, viewers were given a powerful taste of what lies ahead. It began with Neytiri saying, “The strength of the ancestors is here,” followed by intense battle scenes. A voice is heard lamenting, “We cannot defeat this enemy that comes from the stars,” signaling an even more formidable conflict in the next chapter.

The Ash People, known for their aggressive and militant stance, are expected to be a major focus in the upcoming film, with Varang leading them into confrontation with Jake and Neytiri’s family.

Massive Success of the Franchise So Far

James Cameron’s Avatar franchise continues to dominate the box office:

• Avatar (2009): Still the highest-grossing film of all time, earning $2.9 billion worldwide.
• Avatar: The Way of Water (2022): Became the third-highest-grossing film with $2.3 billion globally.

Cameron has confirmed that Fire and Ash will be slightly longer than The Way of Water (3 hours, 12 minutes).

The upcoming film features a large ensemble cast, including:
