Google Arts & Culture now offers 3D virtual tour of ‘Elephanta Caves’

Published on

Google Arts & Culture, in collaboration with CyArk, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), and 12 other institutions, has unveiled Explore Elephanta Caves, a virtual experience showcasing India’s ancient rock-cut marvels. This immersive tour leverages 3D scanning and generative AI to offer global users a digital window into the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Using advanced LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, CyArk, in partnership with the ASI and Instucen Trust, captured more than 6,500 photographs and 197 laser scans of the site’s main cave temple to construct a highly detailed virtual model.

The virtual guided tour brings to life the intricate architecture and historic significance of the Elephanta Caves, making them accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

In a separate initiative, Google Arts & Culture also introduced the Food Mood India Edition, an AI-driven experiment celebrating India’s diverse culinary heritage. With just a few clicks, users can fuse two regional cuisines from across India’s 28 states and 8 union territories to generate unique recipes for starters, soups, main courses, or desserts—tailored to the number of guests.

From blending the fiery cuisine of Maharashtra with Goa’s coastal flair, to mixing the regal spices of Rajasthan with the coconut-rich tastes of Karnataka, the platform highlights India’s incredible gastronomic diversity.

Powered by Google’s Gemini 1.5 Flash-based VertexAI model, the Food Mood India Edition serves as both a recipe generator and a culinary educator, encouraging users to explore the possibilities of fusion food right from their kitchens.
