India Defence Production Hits Record ₹1.5 Lakh Crore in FY 2024-25

Published on

India’s defence production has reached a historic milestone, hitting an unprecedented ₹1,50,590 crore in the Financial Year (FY) 2024-25. This marks an 18% rise from the previous year’s ₹1.27 lakh crore output and a remarkable 90% jump compared to FY 2019-20’s ₹79,071 crore.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh praised the collaborative efforts of the Department of Defence Production, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), public sector manufacturers, and private industry for this achievement. He described the growth as a strong indicator of India defence production strengthening its industrial base.

Public & Private Sectors Drive India Defence Production Growth

DPSUs and other PSUs contributed around 77% of the total production, while the private sector’s share grew from 21% in FY 2023-24 to 23% in FY 2024-25. This reflects the rising role of private companies in the country’s defence ecosystem.

Overall, DPSU production increased by 16%, while the private sector surged by 28% during the fiscal year, driven by policy reforms, ease of doing business, and a decade-long focus on indigenisation.

Defence Manufacturing Powers Aatmanirbhar Bharat

This record output aligns with the government’s push for self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The strategy aims to cut import dependence and build a robust defence industrial complex with strong export potential.

Defence exports also hit a record ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, up 12.04% from ₹21,083 crore in FY 2023-24. With continued policy support, higher private participation, and expanding exports, India’s defence sector is set for even greater acceleration.
