World Sanskrit Day 2025: PM Modi Highlights Efforts to Promote Sanskrit Globally

Published on

New Delhi: On the occasion of World Sanskrit Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Sanskrit as a “timeless source of knowledge and expression,” underscoring its cultural, intellectual, and global significance. The day, observed annually on Shravan Poornima, also coincides with Raksha Bandhan.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Today, on Shravan Poornima, we mark World Sanskrit Day. Sanskrit is a timeless source of knowledge and expression. Its impact can be found across sectors. This day is an occasion to appreciate the effort of every person around the world who is learning and popularising Sanskrit.”

PM Modi’s Initiatives to Promote World Sanskrit Day

Highlighting his government’s efforts, the Prime Minister noted several initiatives undertaken over the past decade to popularize Sanskrit. These include the establishment of Central Sanskrit Universities, creation of Sanskrit Learning Centres, financial grants for Sanskrit scholars, and the ‘Gyan Bharatam Mission’ aimed at digitising ancient manuscripts.

According to PM Modi, these measures have benefitted thousands of students, researchers, and enthusiasts, ensuring the language’s continued relevance in modern times.

Cultural Heritage and Significance of Sanskrit

World Sanskrit Day was first celebrated in 1969 through a collaboration between the Government of India and various Sanskrit institutions. The day traditionally marks the start of the academic year in ancient India, when students began studying scriptures, including the recitation of the Vedas.

This year, Sanskrit Week is being observed from August 6 to 12, 2025, with events across the country to promote learning and awareness. Both Central and State governments are leveraging technology and education to expand the language’s reach globally.

A popular verse describes Sanskrit as Amritam Sanskritam Mitram, Sarsam Saralam Vachah; Ekta-Moolakam Rashtram, Gyan-Vigyan-Poshakam, meaning it is valued for its elegance, clarity, and ability to enrich knowledge, advance science, and strengthen national unity.
