India Hockey Team meets England hockey team in FIH World Cup 2023 today
FIH World Cup 2023: The Indian Men’s Hockey team on track after performance to win their opening game of the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 by a score of 2-0 against Spain.
The Indian hockey team will look to book their place in the final when they take on England on Sunday Today. The match at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela could have seen both teams book their place in the knockout stages with a win.
A packed crowd at the 21,000-capacity Birsa Munda Stadium saw India play some brilliant attacking hockey in the first two quarters, scoring through local player Amit Rohidas from a penalty corner before Hardik Singh doubled the lead with a brilliant solo effort. Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Amit Rohidas then produced a defensive master class.
A win against England is important as it will take India one step closer to the quarter-finals. The hosts will fancy their chances against Wales, the bottom-placed team in the group in 15th, to top what is considered the group of death. England is one place above India in fifth place in the world rankings and there is not been much of a difference between the two sides in the past year or historically.
The two teams played three games against each other last year with their last match at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham ending in a 4-4 draw. They drew 3–3 in the first FIH Pro League match before India won 4–3 in the second, both matches played in April.
While England’s hockey team is coming off a strong 5-0 victory against Wales.
