India Sends 10-Tonne Humanitarian Aid to Somalia Amid Ongoing Crisis

New Delhi: In a significant gesture of solidarity, India has dispatched a 10-tonne consignment of humanitarian aid to Somalia, a nation currently grappling with the combined impact of conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the initiative on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the shipment includes critical medical supplies, surgical items, hospital equipment, and biomedical essentials.

India Extends Lifesaving Support

The aid packages, prominently marked with the Indian tricolour and labeled as a “Gift from the People and Government of India,” underscore India’s ongoing humanitarian commitment to the African nation.

“India’s humanitarian assistance to the people of Somalia continues,” the MEA stated in its post, adding that the shipment has officially departed.

Somalia’s Deepening Humanitarian Crisis

According to the European Commission, Somalia has endured decades of conflict coupled with extreme climate events, severely affecting the nation’s resilience.

From 2020 to 2023, Somalia experienced an unprecedented drought due to five consecutive failed rainy seasons, impacting 90% of the country and affecting over 8 million people.

Floods, Displacement, and El Nino Impact

In late 2023, the Deyr rainy season was worsened by the El Nino phenomenon, resulting in massive flooding that displaced 1.2 million people and affected a total of 2.5 million.

Currently, Somalia is in the grip of a La Nina phase, projected to last until mid-2025, which is already causing dry spells, below-average rainfall, and increased vulnerability to food insecurity, waterborne diseases, and inter-clan conflict.

Somalia’s Humanitarian Outlook for 2025

The humanitarian outlook remains bleak:

  • 6 million Somalis are expected to require urgent, life-saving aid in 2025.
  • Half of the population lacks access to clean water.
  • Food shortages and inadequate shelter continue to pose critical risks.

India’s aid aims to ease the burden on Somalia’s overextended healthcare and disaster relief infrastructure as the country continues to confront multiple, overlapping crises.
