PM Modi to Celebrate Rajendra Chola I’s Legacy at Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival in Tamil Nadu

Published on

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the grand celebrations marking the birth anniversary of the legendary Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I at the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple in Tamil Nadu today. The event coincides with the Aadi Thiruvathirai Festival, an important Shaiva tradition in Tamil culture.

Commemorative Coin to Be Released

As part of the tribute, the Prime Minister will release a commemorative coin in honor of Rajendra Chola I, one of India’s most revered emperors. This event also marks 1,000 years since his remarkable naval expedition to Southeast Asia and the construction of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, a masterpiece of Chola architecture.

Celebrating a Visionary Emperor

Rajendra Chola I (1014–1044 CE) is celebrated for his expansive vision and powerful leadership. Under his rule, the Chola Empire extended its influence far beyond Indian shores. He established Gangaikonda Cholapuram as his imperial capital after triumphant military campaigns, transforming it into a hub of religion, architecture, and administration.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram: A Timeless Symbol of Heritage

Today, the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its majestic sculptures, Chola bronzes, and inscriptions that reveal much about the era’s art and governance. The temple remains a living testament to Chola architectural brilliance and Shaiva devotion.

Aadi Thiruvathirai and the Bhakti Tradition

The Aadi Thiruvathirai festival, closely associated with Tamil Shaiva traditions, also pays homage to the 63 Nayanmars, the saint-poets of Shaivism who were ardently supported by the Chola dynasty. Their devotional hymns and influence continue to shape Tamil spirituality to this day.
