India to Host FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 in October-November

Published on

New Delhi: India has officially been awarded the hosting rights for the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025, scheduled from October 30 to November 27. The tournament will bring together 206 top international players competing for one of the most prestigious titles in the chess world and a spot in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament.

While the host city is yet to be confirmed, excitement is already building in India’s vibrant chess community, which has witnessed a meteoric rise in global stature in recent years.

Single-Elimination Format Continues

The FIDE World Cup, since 2021, has adopted a single-elimination knockout format.
Each round spans three days:

  • Day 1 & 2: Two classical games
  • Day 3: Tie-breaks (if necessary)

The top 50 players in the tournament will receive first-round byes, while seeds 51 to 206 will play based on the top-half vs reversed-lower-half system.

Qualification for 2026 Candidates Tournament

“The top three finishers of the 2025 World Cup will earn direct qualification for the 2026 Candidates Tournament,” said FIDE. The Candidates Tournament decides who will challenge the reigning World Chess Champion.

With Indian chess making global headlines, top names like R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh, and Arjun Erigaisi are expected to lead the home campaign.

“We are thrilled to bring the FIDE World Cup 2025 to India, a country with a deep-rooted passion and support for chess,” said FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky. “We anticipate great interest in the event among local chess lovers, both on-site and online.”

India’s Growing Chess Legacy

India has previously hosted major chess events, including:

  • 2022 Chess Olympiad
  • Tata Steel Chess India
  • 2024 World Junior U20 Championships
  • 5th leg of the 2024 FIDE Women’s Grand Prix
