Pakistan Declines to Send Hockey Team to Asia Cup in India Over Security Concerns

Published on

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has officially informed the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) that it will be difficult to send its national team to India for the upcoming Asia Cup due to security concerns.

PHF President Tariq Bugti stated that the federation has expressed serious reservations about the safety of Pakistani players if they were to travel to India.

“In the existing scenario, our team will face security risks playing in India. Our players are also not keen to travel for the Asia Cup,” Bugti said.

The PHF has formally written to both the FIH and AHF, requesting clarification on the security arrangements and seeking guarantees for the safety of its players.

“We have asked them to let us know what guarantee is there that our players will be safe in India and will be able to focus on the tournament,” he added.

The Asia Cup, scheduled to take place next month in India, also serves as a direct qualifying tournament. The PHF’s withdrawal could have serious implications for the team’s future prospects in international competitions.

The final decision on Pakistan’s participation now rests with the FIH and AHF, as the situation develops.

While the Pakistan government has yet to release an official statement, a senior government official recently indicated that the national hockey team is unlikely to be allowed to travel to India, adding further weight to the PHF’s decision.
