India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I: India Look to Tighten Grip on Series in Raipur

Suryakumar Yadav’s men aim to build momentum as spin-friendly conditions loom large

  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • India lead the five-match T20I series 1–0 after a dominant opening win.
  • Abhishek Sharma’s explosive knock set the tone for India’s World Cup build-up.
  • Raipur conditions are expected to favor spin, playing into India’s strengths.

Raipur: India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I takes center stage on Friday as India national cricket team look to press their advantage against New Zealand national cricket team at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.

Fresh off a commanding win in Nagpur, India have made a strong early statement in their preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Another victory would put the hosts firmly in control of the series.

India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I: Momentum with the Hosts

India’s 48-run victory in the series opener was built on an emphatic batting performance. Asked to bat first, the hosts piled up a daunting 238 for seven, immediately putting New Zealand on the back foot.

The tone was set at the top, where Abhishek Sharma unleashed a blistering assault. His rapid 84 off just 35 deliveries dismantled the bowling attack and gave India early control of the contest.

Middle-Order Firepower and Bowling Impact

India’s innings did not lose momentum in the middle overs. Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya chipped in with quick runs, while Rinku Singh’s unbeaten cameo ensured a strong finish at the death.

Defending the total, India’s bowlers delivered at key moments. Varun Chakaravarthy and Shivam Dube struck twice each, breaking partnerships and preventing New Zealand from mounting a sustained chase.

New Zealand’s Challenge: Consistency Under Pressure

Glenn Phillips was the standout performer for the visitors, scoring a fighting 78 off 40 balls. However, a lack of support from the rest of the lineup proved costly as New Zealand were restricted to 190 for seven.

Heading into the second T20I, the Black Caps will be focused on improving bowling discipline and extracting more stability from their top order.

Raipur Conditions Could Favor Spin

Friday’s clash marks only the second T20I at the Raipur venue. The previous match, a December 2023 encounter against Australia, saw spinners play a decisive role.

Similar conditions are expected, which could again favor India’s deep spin resources. With confidence high, the hosts are likely to field an unchanged XI to give continuity ahead of the World Cup cycle.

Head-to-Head: India Hold the Edge

India enjoy a superior T20I record against New Zealand. Out of 26 matches, India have won 13, while New Zealand have claimed 10 victories, with three games ending in ties.

India T20I Squad:
Suryakumar Yadav (c), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel (vc), Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ishan Kishan (wk), Ravi Bishnoi

Mitchell Santner (c), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway (wk), Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Bevon Jacobs, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Robinson, Ish Sodhi

With form, conditions, and confidence all in their favor, India will enter the India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I knowing a win in Raipur could set the tone for the rest of the series.
