India Welcomes Interim Government in Nepal Led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki

India tonight extended a warm welcome to the formation of a new interim government in Nepal, led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, and expressed optimism that this development will pave the way for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Himalayan nation.

In a late-night statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reaffirmed India’s commitment to working hand in hand with Nepal.

“We welcome the formation of a new Interim Government in Nepal, led by Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki. We are hopeful that this would help in fostering peace and stability.

As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy, and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries,” the MEA statement read.

Sushila Karki Becomes First Woman Interim Prime Minister of Nepal

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal late Friday evening. President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas, the official residence of the President.

Karki’s appointment came after widespread youth-led protests known as the Gen Z uprising, which forced former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign on September 9.

India’s Support for Nepal’s Democratic Transition

India has consistently emphasized its role as a trusted neighbour, committed to supporting Nepal in its democratic transitions. The formation of this interim government is seen as a significant step in addressing the aspirations of Nepal’s younger generation.

The MEA underlined that India will remain engaged with Nepal through developmental partnerships, security cooperation, and cultural ties.

Gen Z Protests Paved Way for Leadership Change

The Gen Z uprising, spearheaded by young activists and supported by Kathmandu Metropolitan Mayor Balendra Shah, played a decisive role in reshaping Nepal’s political leadership.

Following negotiations between Sushila Karki, army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, and other stakeholders, President Paudel appointed Karki as Prime Minister with the mandate to hold general elections within six months.

First Decision: Dissolution of House of Representatives

In her very first decision after assuming office, Prime Minister Sushila Karki dissolved the House of Representatives (HoR). The move sets the stage for fresh elections, a key demand of the protesting groups.

This bold decision highlights Karki’s intent to stabilize the political climate and restore public trust in governance.
