Indian Parliamentary Delegation engages Japanese leaders to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation

Published on

An all-party parliamentary delegation from India, led by MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, concluded a high-level visit to Japan from May 22 to 24, aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties and mobilizing international support against terrorism. The visit featured a series of strategic engagements with Japanese political leaders, senior officials, media representatives, and members of the diplomatic corps.

A key highlight of the visit was a meeting with the Speaker of Japan’s House of Representatives, Fukushiro Nukaga. The Speaker extended condolences for the victims of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, and strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms. He underscored the need for greater Indo-Japanese cooperation in maintaining peace and security across the Indo-Pacific region.

Jha emphasized that the Pahalgam attack was a deliberate act aimed at disrupting peace and development in Jammu & Kashmir. He reiterated India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, noting that there can be no distinction between terrorists and their sponsors. Referring to India’s military response, *Operation Sindoor*, he described it as measured, proportionate, and non-escalatory. Jha urged Japan to support India’s efforts to bring perpetrators of cross-border terrorism—particularly from Pakistan—to justice.

The Indian delegation also held a productive session with members of the Japan-India Parliamentary Friendship League, led by former Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry,Yasutoshi Nishimura. The dialogue focused on India’s counter-terrorism initiatives and the shared resolve between the two nations to address global security threats collaboratively.

Further engagements included meetings with former Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara; Shinako Tsuchiya, Director General of the International Bureau of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP); and Yasuhiro Hanashi, Acting Chairman of the LDP’s Research Commission on Public Safety, Counter-Terrorism, and Anti-Cybercrime Measures. Across these interactions, the Indian side reiterated that neutrality is not an option in the fight against terrorism and called for unified international action.

The delegation also held conversations with members of Japan’s Diet, speakers of prefectural assemblies, senior officials from both national and local governments, Japanese media, and foreign diplomats based in Tokyo. These engagements served to communicate India’s firm anti-terror stance and foster a better understanding of its counter-terrorism policy.
