Kolkata: The nation is remembering Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar on his 207th birth anniversary, honouring his lasting contribution to education and social reform in 19th-century India.
Vidyasagar was born on September 26, 1820, at Birsingha in present-day Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal. His work focused strongly on education, women’s rights and social practices affecting women and children.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Social Reform
Vidyasagar became one of the prominent voices in the campaign for Hindu widow remarriage. His efforts contributed to the passage of the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act in 1856, which legally recognised widow remarriage among Hindus.
He also opposed social practices such as child marriage and polygamy. At the same time, he worked to expand educational opportunities for girls and supported the establishment of schools for female students.
Vidyasagar’s Contribution to Education
Beyond social reform, Vidyasagar made a significant contribution to education. He worked to modernise educational practices and played an important role in making Bengali prose simpler and more accessible.
His book Barnaparichay became an important primer for generations of Bengali-speaking children and remains closely associated with early Bengali education.
Vidyasagar’s Lasting Legacy
Vidyasagar’s reform work connected education with broader social change. His efforts were particularly significant in areas involving women’s education, widow remarriage and the welfare of children.
His legacy is often discussed alongside that of Raja Rammohan Roy, another major figure in India’s social reform movement. While Rammohan Roy helped establish an early foundation for social and intellectual reform, Vidyasagar carried the reform effort further into questions surrounding education and the lives of women and children.
