JP Nadda Slams Nehru Over Indus Water Treaty, Calls It a Historic Blunder
BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda has strongly criticised former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for signing the Indus Water Treaty in 1960, calling it one of the biggest strategic mistakes in India’s post-independence history. In a detailed post shared on social media X.com, Nadda claimed that the treaty compromised India’s long-term water security by handing over 80 percent of the Indus basin’s water resources to Pakistan and leaving India with only 20 percent.
Nadda also alleged that Nehru signed the agreement without consulting Parliament and pushed it through without meaningful debate. He pointed out that the treaty was placed before Parliament only two months after it was signed and was debated for just two hours.
Indus Water Treaty Controversy – Lack of Consultation and Parliamentary Debate
According to JP Nadda, the Indus Water Treaty controversy stems from the fact that the agreement was concluded without any consultation with India’s elected representatives. He said several MPs from Nehru’s own party described the treaty as a “second partition”, noting that important national resources were surrendered with no tangible benefits in return. Nadda referred to Congress leader Asoka Mehta and A.C. Guha, who openly criticised Nehru for agreeing to pay Rs 83 crore to Pakistan despite India’s foreign exchange crisis at the time.
Opposition From Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Other Leaders
Nadda highlighted that a young Atal Bihari Vajpayee had also opposed the treaty, arguing that friendship with Pakistan could not be built on the basis of compromise and injustice. He said Vajpayee warned that conceding Pakistan’s unreasonable demands would not improve bilateral relations, and that Nehru’s decision undermined India’s national interest.
Indus Water Treaty Controversy – Nadda Applauds Modi Government’s Corrective Action
In his remarks on the Indus Water Treaty controversy, Nadda praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for placing the treaty in abeyance and taking decisive action to uphold national interests. He asserted that the move rectified a “grave historical wrong” committed under Nehru’s leadership and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to putting “Nation First”.
A ‘Himalayan Blunder’ With Lasting Impact
Concluding his statement, Nadda said history must recognise the treaty as a “Himalayan Blunder”, describing it as a decision that restricted India’s ability to use its own river waters for generations. He further criticised Nehru’s dismissive tone toward dissenting voices in Parliament and accused him of neglecting the sentiments of the Indian people.
