Government Reaffirms Commitment to Bharatiya Antariksh Station 2035 and Crewed Moon Mission by 2040

Published on

During a special discussion in the Lok Sabha on India’s first astronaut aboard the International Space Station, Union Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh reaffirmed the government’s long-term vision for the country’s space programme. He stated that India is firmly committed to establishing an operational Bharatiya Antariksh Station 2035 and to sending an Indian crewed mission to the Moon by 2040. These ambitious missions, according to the minister, are integral to the country’s roadmap for achieving a fully developed “Viksit Bharat” well before 2047.

The minister also congratulated Indian Air Force Group Captain Subhanshu Shukla for his successful mission to the International Space Station, adding that the entire nation is proud of this historic achievement.

Bharatiya Antariksh Station 2035 – Long-Term Vision for India’s Space Sector

Dr Jitendra Singh highlighted that plans for Bharatiya Antariksh Station 2035 are progressing with clear targets. He emphasised that India aims to become self-reliant in human spaceflight capabilities and will build a fully operational space station in low Earth orbit within the next decade. The initiative is part of a broader vision under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote innovation, expand private participation, and build cutting-edge space technology.

Strengthening India’s Space Capabilities Through Reforms and Start-Ups

The minister noted that numerous reforms have been introduced over the past 11 years, leading to substantial growth in innovation and research. He said the space sector has been opened for the private industry, and a large number of start-ups are now actively developing technologies in collaboration with ISRO and the Department of Space. These initiatives have helped accelerate development of critical space infrastructure and enhanced India’s overall technological capacity.

Indian Crewed Mission to the Moon by 2040

India’s plan to send a crewed mission to the Moon by 2040 reflects the country’s growing expertise in complex space missions. Dr Singh stated that operational experience gained through the Gaganyaan mission and other human spaceflight initiatives will form the foundation for the upcoming lunar mission. The minister added that technologies used in rescue operations, such as Operation Sindoor, were developed under the current government, showcasing how space research benefits other sectors.

Opposition Reaction and Contribution of Scientists

Dr Singh also voiced disappointment with the behaviour of some opposition MPs, saying they failed to acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of Indian scientists and space experts. He reminded the House that India’s space sector has significantly contributed to the national economy and continues to make daily life easier through innovations across sectors such as agriculture, navigation, communication and weather forecasting.
