Kolkata Law College Rape Case: Accused Sent to Police Custody Till July 8
Kolkata: The three individuals accused in the gang-rape of a student at South Calcutta Law College have been remanded to police custody until July 8, following their appearance before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Alipore Court on Tuesday.
The accused — Monojit Mishra (31), Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), and Zaib Ahmed (19) — allegedly committed the assault inside the college’s guard room on June 25 between 7:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. A fourth person, Pinaki Banerjee, the security guard on duty that night, was also arrested and remanded to police custody until July 4.
During the court proceedings, the public prosecutor sought a 10-day police remand, stating that the survivor had fallen ill during the assault and was handed an inhaler by the accused before the attack resumed. The defence lawyer, however, claimed the accused were being framed and challenged the survivor’s allegation that videos existed on the accused’s phones.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma stated that the case remains under sensitive investigation. “The FIR was prompt, and arrests were made within 12 hours. Evidence has been collected and is under analysis,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police issued a warning on social media against any attempt to reveal the identity of the survivor, calling it a “serious violation” of the law and a breach of moral ethics.
Adding to the tension, a section of lawyers has requested the Alipore Bar Council and Court Bar Association to boycott representing the accused. Advocates from the BJP’s legal department also protested, questioning whether Monojit Mishra, a self-proclaimed lawyer, had disclosed his criminal history and employment truthfully.
“We refuse to let accused rapists represent the legal community,” said advocate Subir Sengupta, emphasizing that all three accused, being from the legal field, should be ostracized from professional circles.
