Konkan Rains: Landslide Hits Ratnagiri, Schools Shut in Raigad, Koyna Dam Gates Opened

Published on

Maharashtra’s Konkan region, particularly the districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, has been battered by heavy rainfall since last night, triggering widespread disruptions and safety concerns.

Key Highlights:

  • A landslide in Ratnagiri’s Kashedi Ghat caused traffic disruptions along the busy Mumbai-Goa Highway.
  • Ratnagiri district recorded over 117 mm of rainfall, causing several rivers to overflow and increasing the risk of flooding.
  • In Raigad, heavy rainfall forced the closure of schools across several talukas. Authorities have also suspended trekking activities at Raigad Fort till August 15 due to potential landslide threats.
  • In Satara, six gates of the Koyna Dam were opened due to rising water levels, resulting in waterlogging in nearby low-lying areas.

Weather Forecast and Alerts:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, warning of very heavy rainfall in isolated places. The ghat sections of Pune and Satara are also expected to receive intense downpours over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain indoors, avoid travel unless necessary, and follow updates from local disaster response teams.
