Laos on Alert as Tropical Storm Fengshen Nears Bringing Heavy Rain and Flood Risks

Published on

Residents in Laos are being warned to brace for potential flash floods and landslides as tropical storm Fengshen approaches the region. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued a statement on Monday cautioning that the storm will bring widespread rainfall and strong winds from October 23 to 24. The system is expected to move across Vietnam before entering Laos, triggering thunderstorms and heavy rain across multiple provinces.

Impact of Tropical Storm Fengshen on Laos

According to the weather department, tropical storm Fengshen will cause light to moderate thunderstorms across most parts of the country. However, certain regions are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, increasing the risk of landslides and flash floods, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas.

Authorities Urge Caution and Preparedness

The Lao authorities have advised residents to stay alert, monitor official weather updates, and take necessary safety precautions. Local officials have been instructed to prepare emergency response measures, especially in regions prone to flooding and landslides. The public is also encouraged to avoid traveling through flooded or mountainous areas during the storm period.

Possible Effects on Agriculture and Infrastructure

Experts warn that the heavy rainfall could damage crops and infrastructure, disrupting transportation and power supplies in affected regions. The Ministry of Agriculture has urged farmers to take preventive measures to protect their fields and livestock ahead of the storm.

Government and Community Readiness

Disaster management teams have been put on standby to respond to emergencies. Local authorities are also coordinating with community leaders to ensure timely evacuation if required. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions from official sources as the country prepares for the storm’s impact.
