Launch of PSLV-C61 vehicle mission could not be accomplished: ISRO chief

Published on

The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) 101st mission, intended to improve the nation’s land observation capabilities, was unsuccessful on Sunday morning due to an issue in the third stage of the rocket.

“Today, we attempted the launch of the PSLV-C61 vehicle. It is a four-stage launch vehicle. The first two stages functioned as expected. However, we observed an anomaly during the third stage. As a result, the mission could not be completed. We are currently analyzing the vehicle’s performance and will return as soon as possible,” said ISRO chief V. Narayanan on the space agency’s official YouTube channel.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)-C61, carrying the Earth Observation Satellite-09 (EOS-09), lifted off at 5:59 AM from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. However, due to the third-stage issue, the launch had to be called off. This marks the third failure of a PSLV mission after 21 consecutive successful launches—the previous failures occurred with PSLV-D1 in 1993 and PSLV-C39 in 2017.

Had the launch succeeded, the 1,696 kg satellite equipped with a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload would have been placed into a Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO). This orbit would have allowed the satellite to observe the same location on Earth at the same local time daily, ensuring consistent lighting and observation conditions. The five-year mission was designed to deliver high-resolution images for applications including agriculture, forestry, soil moisture assessment, hydrology, and flood monitoring in all weather conditions.

This setback follows ISRO’s recent milestone on January 30, when it successfully completed its 100th mission. On that occasion, a GSLV-F15 rocket launched the NVS-02 satellite, part of the NavIC navigation system, which supports land, sea, and air navigation, along with precision agriculture.
