Low Pressure to Form Over Bay of Bengal Around October 24, Says IMD — Odisha on Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the first post-monsoon low pressure over Bay of Bengal is likely to develop around October 24, 2025. Odisha, a state frequently affected by cyclonic storms during October, is once again on alert as the weather system begins to form over the region.
According to IMD, multiple weather models indicate the development of a low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea, with the possibility of intensification and west-northwest movement in the coming days. The department added that environmental conditions remain favorable for cyclogenesis — the process that leads to the formation of a depression.
IMD Forecasts Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal — Monitoring Underway
Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, Manorama Mohanty, stated that the department is closely observing the evolving weather pattern. “We are monitoring the anticipated system continuously, and more information about its intensity and track will be available in the coming days,” she said. Meteorologists are tracking whether the system will move close to the eastern coast or shift towards Bangladesh.
Odisha’s Cyclone History Linked to Bay of Bengal Systems
Odisha’s geographical location makes it highly vulnerable to cyclones forming in the Bay of Bengal. Historical data shows that several devastating cyclones have struck the state during October, including the 1999 Super Cyclone, Phailin (2013), Hudhud (2014), Titli (2018), and Dana (2024). Each event left a significant impact, underscoring the state’s recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions.
Weather Outlook for Odisha: Temperatures Likely to Stay Normal
The regional meteorological office has predicted that both night and day temperatures will remain normal across Odisha between October 17 and 23. From October 24 to 30, night temperatures are expected to range from normal to slightly above normal, while day temperatures will likely remain steady. Residents are advised to stay updated on IMD alerts as the low pressure develops.
Experts Warn of Close Watch on Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal
Weather experts have emphasized that while the system is still forming, it may strengthen depending on oceanic and atmospheric conditions. Continuous tracking will determine if it transforms into a depression or cyclonic storm. Authorities have urged coastal residents and fishermen to follow advisories issued by IMD to ensure preparedness.
