MCL to Open Two New Coal Mines in Odisha’s Talcher Coalfields with 35 Million Tonne Capacity

Published on

Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has announced plans to commission two new coal mines in Odisha with a combined annual production capacity of 35 million tonnes. The announcement was made by MCL Chairman and Managing Director Uday A. Kaole during a press conference at the company’s headquarters in Sambalpur.

Subhadra and Balbhadra Mines to Boost Coal Production

The two upcoming mines — Subhadra Mine and Balbhadra Mine — will be located in the Talcher coalfields of Angul district, a major coal-producing region in eastern India.

  • Subhadra Mine is projected to produce 25 million tonnes per year by the end of the 2025-26 financial year.
  • Balbhadra Mine is expected to begin operations with an annual capacity of 10 million tonnes by 2029-2030.

“These projects are part of MCL’s long-term strategy to ramp up coal output and ensure consistent supply to India’s energy sector,” Mr. Kaole stated.

Strengthening India’s Energy Sector

MCL currently operates 18 coal mines in Odisha, including 15 open-cast and 3 underground mines. Key operational mines include Bhubaneswari, Jagannath, Hingula, Lingaraj, and Talcher. The addition of Subhadra and Balbhadra is expected to enhance coal availability and support the country’s growing power and industrial demands.

The expansion aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving energy security while maintaining domestic coal supply for thermal power and industrial use.
