In a record-breaking celebration of creativity and collaboration, the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog hosted Mega Tinkering Day 2025, India’s largest ever school-based tinkering event. The initiative brought together students from more than 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) across all 35 states and union territories.
4,73,350 Students Build DIY Vacuum Cleaners During Mega Tinkering Day 2025
The nationwide virtual event connected 4,73,350 students from 9,467 ATL-equipped schools, all working on the same challenge — designing and building a DIY vacuum cleaner using everyday materials available in their labs. Guided by a step-by-step online session, participants learned scientific concepts and collaborated in real time, no matter where they were located.
From the icy terrains of Leh, Ladakh & Kargil, the remotest villages in Aspirational Districts like Virudhunagar, the vibrant landscapes of Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, to the southern tip of Kanniyakumari and the deserts of Bhuj & Kutch, students showcased the spirit of innovation. Even the AIM team joined the hands-on action, building vacuum cleaners alongside the participants.
A National Movement for Innovation
Mission Director of AIM, Deepak Bagla, hailed the event as a milestone aligned with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat.
“Over 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs came together in one synchronized hour of creativity, with lakhs of students building, learning, and innovating as one. No other country in the world has mobilized innovation at this scale inside its school ecosystem,” said Bagla.
Since its inception, AIM has set up over 10,000 ATLs in schools nationwide, offering access to 3D printers, robotics kits, IoT devices, and other cutting-edge tools. These labs equip middle- to high-school students with practical technology skills and real-world problem-solving abilities.
The Mega Tinkering Day 2025 was more than a project-building session — it was a national innovation movement. It served as the launchpad for the year’s tinkering activities, uniting students, teachers, mentors, higher education institutions, and industry partners.
With lakhs of young minds now inspired, AIM continues its mission to nurture creative thinkers, innovators, and entrepreneurs who will make India future-ready.
