Minister Harsh Malhotra: India’s Road Infrastructure Among World’s Largest, Driving Growth and Connectivity

Published on

New Delhi: Minister of State for Road, Transport and Highways, Harsh Malhotra, today reiterated the government’s commitment to building a world-class road and transport infrastructure that fosters economic growth, enhances connectivity, and ensures safety and sustainability.

Speaking at the Road and Highways Summit in Delhi, Mr. Malhotra highlighted the transformative progress achieved over the past 11 years. “The government has worked tirelessly to connect cities, empower communities, and accelerate development through an unprecedented scale and pace of highway construction,” he said.

India Now Has the World’s Second-Largest Road Network

Mr. Malhotra revealed that India’s national highway network has expanded from 91,000 km in 2014 to over 1.46 lakh km in 2025 — making it the second-largest road network in the world.

“These highways are more than just roads; they are lifelines of progress,” he added. “They connect people, industries, and opportunities. By expanding the network, the government has redefined the travel experience — making it faster, safer, and significantly more comfortable for every citizen.”

Road Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Growth

The minister emphasized that modern highways are playing a key role in economic development, job creation, and regional integration. The improved road infrastructure has also enabled logistics efficiency, reduced travel times, and boosted tourism and trade.

With a focus on sustainability and safety, Mr. Malhotra also noted that the government is incorporating green technologies, smart systems, and modern engineering practices into future highway projects.

As India continues to grow its infrastructure footprint, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to prioritize:

  • Increased investment in smart highways
  • Enhanced road safety measures
  • Eco-friendly construction practices
  • Last-mile connectivity to rural and underserved regions

Mr. Malhotra concluded by reaffirming the government’s vision: “A robust road infrastructure is not just about reaching a destination; it’s about building a stronger, more connected India that delivers opportunities to every doorstep.”
