  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • National Testing Agency cancelled NEET UG 2026 conducted on May 3.
  • The examination will be re-conducted on fresh dates to be announced later.
  • The Centre has handed the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a detailed probe.

New Delhi: The National Testing Agency on Tuesday cancelled the NEET (UG) 2026 examination conducted on May 3, citing serious concerns emerging from investigative findings and inputs shared by law enforcement agencies.

The agency announced that the medical entrance examination will now be conducted again on fresh dates, which will be notified separately through official channels.

The decision was approved by the Government of India after central agencies reviewed evidence linked to alleged irregularities in the examination process.

NEET UG 2026 Cancelled After Investigation Inputs

In an official statement issued on May 12, the NTA said it had referred the matter to central agencies on May 8 for independent verification and further action.

According to the agency, subsequent findings established that “the present examination process could not be allowed to stand.”

The statement signals that authorities believe the credibility of the examination may have been compromised at a level significant enough to affect the fairness of the national selection process.

The second-order effect is likely to be widespread anxiety among lakhs of medical aspirants and parents, especially after months of preparation and the intense competition associated with NEET admissions.

CBI Probe Ordered Into NEET UG 2026 Controversy

The Centre has now transferred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a comprehensive inquiry.

The NTA said it would fully cooperate with investigators by providing records, examination materials and all necessary support required for the probe.

The move indicates the government is treating the matter not merely as an administrative lapse but as a potential criminal investigation involving larger systemic concerns.

The controversy could intensify pressure for structural reforms in India’s high-stakes entrance examination ecosystem, which has repeatedly faced allegations linked to paper leaks, impersonation networks and exam malpractice.

What Happens Next for NEET UG Candidates

The NTA clarified that students will not need to register again for the re-examination.

Existing registration data, candidature details and previously selected examination centres from the May 2026 cycle will remain valid for the fresh test.

The agency also announced that no additional examination fee would be charged. Fees already paid by candidates will be refunded, while the cost of the re-examination will be managed internally by the NTA.

Fresh examination dates and revised admit card schedules are expected to be announced soon.

NTA Urges Students to Avoid Rumours

The NTA acknowledged that cancelling the examination would create inconvenience and emotional stress for candidates and families.

However, it said the decision was necessary to preserve public trust in the national examination system.

Students and parents have been advised to rely only on official announcements issued by the agency and avoid unverified claims circulating on social media platforms.

The cancellation of one of India’s most important entrance examinations is expected to trigger wider debate over exam security, digital monitoring and institutional accountability in competitive testing systems.
