  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • NEET UG 2026 re-examination will be conducted on June 21.
  • Admit cards will be issued by June 14.
  • NEET exams will shift to computer-based testing from next year.

New Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday announced that the re-examination for NEET UG 2026 will be conducted on June 21 following the cancellation of the earlier test over alleged paper leak concerns.

Addressing the media in New Delhi, the minister said students remain the government’s top priority and assured candidates that steps are being taken to strengthen the integrity of the examination system.

The announcement comes amid nationwide anxiety among lakhs of medical aspirants after the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test was scrapped earlier this month.

NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam Date Announced

According to the government, candidates appearing for the fresh NEET UG examination will receive their admit cards by June 14.

The National Testing Agency also urged students and parents to rely only on official communication channels for updates regarding the examination process.

The previous NEET UG exam conducted on May 3 was cancelled after allegations of paper leaks and irregularities surfaced, prompting the Centre to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The controversy triggered widespread protests and political criticism across several states.

Major NEET Reform: CBT Mode From Next Year

Dharmendra Pradhan also announced a major structural change in the NEET examination format.

From next year onward, NEET UG will be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode instead of the traditional OMR-based system.

The shift is aimed at improving exam security, reducing manipulation risks and strengthening monitoring mechanisms.

The second-order effect of this transition could significantly reshape India’s competitive exam ecosystem, including coaching patterns, test infrastructure and digital readiness among students from rural and urban backgrounds.

Government Admits Need for NTA Reforms

The Education Minister acknowledged that the NTA requires “definite reforms” following the controversy.

He said the government is committed to ensuring that deserving students do not suffer because of fraudulent networks or what he described as “education mafia” activities.

The admission from the Centre is notable because it signals recognition of deeper systemic weaknesses within India’s high-stakes examination structure.

Education experts believe the crisis could now accelerate broader reforms involving:

  • Digital exam systems
  • Stronger cybersecurity
  • Centralised monitoring
  • Candidate verification mechanisms
  • Faster investigation protocols
  • NEET Controversy Continues to Trigger Debate

The NEET cancellation has become one of the biggest education controversies in recent years, affecting nearly 22 lakh aspirants nationwide.

Apart from student anxiety, the issue has intensified political debate over exam management, centralisation and the role of the NTA in conducting national-level entrance tests.

For now, the government is attempting to restore public confidence through stricter oversight and faster reforms ahead of the re-examination next month.
