Kathmandu: A fresh flood threat has emerged near the Nepal-Tibet border after a large lake formed behind debris from a landslide, raising concerns that another sudden release of water could cause severe flooding downstream.

Chinese authorities have warned that the temporary barrier holding back the water is at risk of overflowing or breaking.

The warning comes just days after a devastating flash flood struck the same wider region, killing hundreds and leaving thousands of people unaccounted for.

Barrier Lake Near Nepal Border Raises Alarm

The lake was created after landslide debris blocked the natural flow of a river.

Such formations are known as barrier lakes or landslide-dammed lakes. They can be highly unstable because the natural barrier is made of loose rock, soil, mud and other debris.

According to reports, the lake was holding millions of cubic metres of water, with the volume expected to increase further.

By Friday morning, China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported that approximately 2.5 million cubic metres of water had accumulated.

If the debris barrier fails suddenly, the accumulated water could rush downstream with significant destructive force.

Nepal Issues Emergency Warning

Nepal’s disaster management authorities have also issued a warning over the rising water level.

Residents living along lower riverbanks, passengers and rescue personnel working in the affected area have been urged to exercise extreme caution.

Authorities have advised people to move to safer locations away from riverbanks and other potentially dangerous areas.

The warning is particularly important for rescue teams, who may otherwise be exposed to sudden changes in river levels while operating near the disaster zone.

Fresh Threat Comes After Deadly Flash Flood

The latest alert follows Wednesday’s devastating flash flood in the same region.

Scientists have linked the earlier disaster to a possible mountain glacier collapse, which sent enormous quantities of ice, rock and debris into a river system.

The resulting surge caused extensive destruction and affected communities on both sides of the border region.

According to reports cited by The Himalayan, 469 people had been confirmed dead across eight districts, while 2,381 people were reported missing, including 644 foreign nationals.

The figures remain subject to verification as rescue teams continue searching affected areas.

China Evacuates Villagers and Tourists

Chinese authorities have also moved quickly to relocate people affected by the disaster in Gyirong County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region.

CCTV reported that 499 villagers and construction workers had been accommodated in safer locations.

Authorities also evacuated 555 tourists from affected areas. According to the report, no tourists remained stranded following the evacuation operation.

The evacuation is aimed at reducing the risk to people who could be exposed to further landslides, flooding or a potential barrier-lake breach.

India Coordinates Assistance for Citizens

The developing situation has also prompted concern in India because of the number of Indian nationals who may have been affected by the disaster.

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said India remains in contact with authorities in Nepal and China.

The coordination is focused on locating, assisting and evacuating Indian citizens affected by the flooding and related emergencies.

Why a Barrier Lake Can Be Dangerous

A landslide-dammed lake can become dangerous when water continues accumulating behind an unstable natural barrier.

Unlike engineered dams, these barriers are not designed to withstand sustained water pressure. Heavy rainfall, additional landslides or erosion can weaken them further.

A sudden breach could therefore release a large volume of water and sediment within a short period, potentially causing another flash flood downstream.

With the region already recovering from a major disaster, authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance and urging residents, travellers and rescue personnel to follow evacuation and safety instructions.

The immediate priority remains preventing further loss of life while teams monitor the lake and continue rescue and relief operations.
